On Top of the World: Education and Economic Development in the Andean Highlands
My name is Mary Jeanne Brenholts, and I'm a senior at the University of Notre Dame. I spent this past summer living and teaching in Puno, Peru through Notre Dame's International Summer Service Learning Program (ISSLP). While in Puno, I taught English, traveled, learned about Andean culture, and made some incredible friends and memories. I will use this website to explore some of the most striking experiences and observations that I had in Puno, specifically from an anthropological angle and using anecdotes from some of the "critical moments" that I had which shaped my experience and what I have taken away from it. I will attempt to make sense of these issues, namely education and English language education and economic development in the form of tourism, their causes and effects, and possible solutions.
